Free II: I Can’t Breathe

My name is Myah Freeman or you can call me MyahnArt, the name of my brand! I am currently a rising senior at Florida State University majoring in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program with a concentration in painting and sculpture. I was born and raised in Jacksonville, Florida and I’ve always been very talented since I was a kid, from being able to draw portraits of family members to hand building ceramic sculptures. Much of my work serves as a means of advocacy for the Black community.

This work depicts a Black woman with the words across her mouth, “I CAN’T BREATHE.” This digital piece alludes to the recent police brutality incident involving George Floyd. With her mouth whited out, this represents her being silenced by the system, silenced by white supremacy.

To me, my work is a means of not only bringing light to the troubles that we face as a Black community but also to the beauties. When I create work about our troubles, it is a means of emotional release and communication with those who are also aware. When I create work about our beauties, it is a means of reinforcing and affirming the magic and power that we possess as a race.
